Last Saturday, January 14, FMRQ delegates met for the second time this year, at Montreal’s Centre Mont-Royal. They were able to attend a presentation by Dr Kenneth Harris, Executive Director, Office of Specialty Education and Deputy CEO at the Royal College, on the changes currently under way in medical education, particularly the introduction of the Competence by Design approach. Discussions also covered privacy issues, evaluation of the impact of the tools the Federation uses to communicate, and developments in the negotiations for renewal of our collective agreement, providing the delegates attending with an opportunity to express their dissatisfaction with the Ministry’s response to our demands, and to put forward their views on how to mobilize the membership.

There are many books dealing with psychological distress, anxiety and stress, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD, and self-esteem that help us begin thinking about how to improve our situation. The FMRQ’s Resident Wellness Committee (RWC) has listed a number of them for you. Some are humorous, others practical. We invite you to take a look at this list in the Health and wellness section under Bibliotherapy. Most of these books can be purchased online. Note that comments on English-language books are in English, while on French-language books they are in French.

On Friday, October 21, 2016, the Federation held its 21st Quebec Career Day, at Montreal’s Palais des congrès convention centre. Some 850 medical residents attended and met with representatives from 100 medical establishments. Quebec Career Day aims at bringing together the upcoming generation of physicians with medical establishments looking for physicians, to foster exchanges between the two groups early in the year, in a single location. Again, this event turned out to be a success on all counts.

The application period for obtaining a PREM in family medicine is fast approaching. Final-year residents must submit their applications for a position within one or more regional departments of general medicine (DRMGs) between October 15 and November 15, 2016. For further information on PREMs and PEMs in family medicine, get in touch with Geneviève Coiteux by calling 514-282-0256 or 1-800-465-0215, or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The FMRQ recently spoke out to the MSSS and DRMGs against the fact that certain local services networks (réseaux locaux de services, or RLSs) and clinics are inviting medical residents to social activities where the residents are asked to sign undertakings, before the official application period has even begun. If you catch wind of such practices, please get in touch with Geneviève Coiteux at the FMRQ.
